Why Should You See
A Dermatologist?

Dermatologists are doctors who specialize in treating the skin, and its appendages, the hair and nails, They study the structure and function of the skin, including its role in immunity, protection of internal organs, excretion, regulation of body temperature and social interaction. Dermatologists are best equipped to quickly diagnose, and treat skin diseases and disorders, to minimise loss of function and the impact on quality of life.

SKIN, HAIR AND NAIL DISORDERS

Skin Cancer Screening & Management

Fair-skinned individuals (skin types I-III), with a family history of skin cancer, and who are frequently exposed to the sun, have the greatest risk of developing skin cancer. Surveillance or screening is important in early detection and management of skin cancer.

Hair Disorders

Alopecia is the medical term for hair loss. The many different causes of alopecia may result in either temporary hair loss, or permanent destruction of the hair follicle. Consult your dermatologist early to prevent or minimize permanent hair loss.

Skin Disorders

Eczema, Psoriasis, Acne, Pigmentary Disorders, Urticaria or Hives, Skin Lupus, Skin Cancer, Blistering Disorders are some of the conditions we see and treat. Management of chronic disorders is best achieved with follow-up care recommended by your dermatologist.

Nail Disorders

The nail may be involved when diseases like Psoriasis, Lichen Planus or Eczema affect the skin. The nails, especially the toe nails, are susceptible to fungal infections which your dermatologist will treat with a prescription, and follow-up over several months.

Surgical

SKIN BIOPSY, CRYOTHERAPY, STEROID INJECTIONS

Diagnostic: Skin Biopsy

Dermatologists use skin biopsies to confirm the diagnosis of uncommon skin disorders, as well as detect skin cancer. A skin biopsy is a simple procedure that involves cutting out a small sample of the affected skin, which is then sent to a pathologist for testing. An instrument called a punch is often used.

Removal of moles, cysts and skin cancer

Excision, shave removal and curettage are some of the methods used to remove unwanted or abnormal growths or cysts. Prior to your procedure we will discuss with you the pros and cons of each procedure, so that we can choose the right procedure for you.

Cryotherapy

The use of liquid nitrogen, (boiling point of -196 degrees Celsius), to freeze and destroy warts, molluscum contagiousum and precancerous skin lesions.

Steroid Injections

Injection of steroids directly into the affected skin, is used to treat keloids, acne cysts, some scalp conditions and some types of skin lupus. Injections may need to be performed monthly until an adequate response is seen.

MICRODERMABRASION, RADIO FREQUENCY, MICRONEEDLING

Microdermabrasion

Previously dubbed " the lunchtime peel", this procedure has minimal downtime and few complications. The procedure involves the use of aluminium oxide crystals and suction, to slough off dead skin cells and stimulate collagen production. It is used to improve skin texture and tone, to reduce and remove hyperpigmentation including melasma and acne spots and scars, as well as for rejuvenation.

Microneedling

This is used for the treatment of acne scars, stretch marks and for rejuvenation. This involves the use of an electric, medical device with a sterile, disposable needle cartridge to stimulate collagen repair in the skin.

Burning of Warts

Electrodessication or superficial burning, is used to remove skin tags, seborrhoeic keratoses, and Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra, otherwise called warts. Like all other procedures, a consultation visit is required before the procedure.

Radiofrequency

The Etwo radiofrequency device is used for remodelling of the dermis. It is useful for treatment of scars, stretch marks and rejuvenation. The Etwo has 2 applications: the Sublime which is used for skin contouring or tightening, and the Sublative which is used for improvement of skin texture and tone.
